The Donor's Perspective

When you donate through a GivSmart Donors Choice program, you pick the organization that will receive the money generated by your reusable clothes and household goods. Whether you are cleaning your closets, wrapping up a rummage or garage sale, moving or having a clothing drive, there are many reasons why GivSmart’s programs are a great solution for you and the community:

  • Just like a typical cash donation, you choose the organization to help.
  • Our GivSmart at Your Door pick-ups are free to you and the organization you have chosen.
  • You will receive a donation receipt that may be used for a tax deduction if you choose one of our nonprofit program partners listed here.
  • These days, most organizations are facing funding challenges. GivSmart pays the highest rates so even small donations can make a big difference.
  • Collecting and selling reusable items, “Re-use”, is even more efficient than conventional recycling.
  • Thrift stores fill a critical need in every community. GivSmart is proud to be a contracted supply partner to Value Village, who has helped US nonprofits raise funds for over 50 years.
  • Most of us have a surplus of “stuff”. Sooner or later we will need to get rid of it; why not put it to good use helping an organization you believe in?

Want to know more? Here is The Organization’s Perspective

Clearly, donating through GivSmart is great for the donor. But are GivSmart’s Donors Choice fundraising programs efficient and profitable for the Faith, School, Nonprofit, Sports League or Team, Club or Fraternal Organization I care about?

The simple answer is a resounding YES! To understand why, a bit of background is needed. Fundraising programs are successful when an organization focuses on their strengths and relies on partners to handle the rest. Can you imagine the Girl Scouts baking and packaging all those Thin Mints? A similar challenge confronts most organizations who see the potential in a “reusable goods” fundraiser. Just as with the Girl Scouts and their bakery partner, an organization also needs a professional, reliable partner who can handle the volume of reusable goods efficiently and support their efforts in other ways. That partner also needs to have a program that is just the right size and scope for their group and yet still worth doing. Great concept, but where is that reliable business partner, that program? Missing! As a result, without that partner, there is just too much risk and too much work so organizations never get beyond the “how could we make that work?” stage.

Oh my, how things have changed!

In 2009 the picture changed dramatically with the launch of GivSmart, LLC and our Donors Choice programs. We are the reliable partner, the equivalent of the Baking Company for the Girl Scouts!

Why GivSmart’s Donors Choice programs work

The GivSmart Donors Choice fundraising programs take the risk and much, if not all of the work out of a reusable goods fundraiser for an organization. As with all good fundraisers, ours start with the organization’s strength: its impact, present and future, and its value to its members and the community. Drawing on this connection, the organization asks the community for donations of reusable goods from you and other supporters. And we will help the organization with this step with a wide range of marketing tools and advice. The organization chooses an event or ongoing program that can take on a number of forms:

  • Clothing Drive(s)
  • Ongoing Drop-off
  • GivSmart at Your Door pick-up (at the donor’s request)
  • and other activities
We will even make wrapping up a rummage or garage sale easy and profitable! In addition, we know time and volunteers are limited so besides marketing help we can handle the pick-ups, track the donors and take care of the associated bookkeeping.

OK, all that sounds great but let’s talk about why an organization does fundraising in the first place: money! Our rates are based on the method of collection. Our research leads us to believe our rates are the highest available for this kind of fundraiser anywhere in the US: typically between $0.15 and $0.20 per pound for “cloth” (including shoes etc., go here for the very broad list of what qualifies for this rate).

Once the donations are collected, they are weighed and the organization is credited for the amount on a pre-determined per-pound basis that is spelled out in an agreement between the organization and GivSmart LLC. The final step, sorting and selling, is handled by the largest privately held retail chain of thrift stores in North America, Value Village. GivSmart LLC is a contracted supply partner to Value Village and all donations go into their supply chain. Here is an amazing fact: Value Village has paid billions of dollars for donated merchandise to community organizations in their 50+ years of business! Imagine the incredible impact that money has made over the years.

So, there you have it. GivSmart and Value Village are the reliable partners that have been missing all these years. And now, you have a choice of who will be helped with your donations and local organizations have new, reliable fundraising options with great potential!

Ready to give it a try? Great! As a donor, it’s easy to request a pick-up through our website (or give us a call at 800-789-0719) and be confident the organization you choose will receive the highest possible return for your donation while helping the environment and the community at the same time.
